Travel Awards

Amount: $1,000.00 USD

Two awards of $1,000 USD each and complimentary registration to ACSM’s 69^th Annual Meeting in San Diego, California May 31 - June 4, 2022 will be offered. Winners will also have the opportunity to meet with a GSSI scientist to discuss research interests and career advice. GSSI and ACSM are committed to supporting diversity and female representation in sports science and nutrition. At least one of the two awards will be given to a female and/or diverse (as defined by NIH) candidate.

The awards will be presented to the students with the most outstanding research projects of the year. Students will be judged based on the quality of the research project via theirs abstract and extended abstract as well as the extent of the student’s participation in the project.

In 2022, the American College of Sports Medicine Foundation will be offering two (2) $200 scholarships to graduate students who are presenting research projects at ACSM’s 69^th Annual Meeting in San Diego, California from May 31 – June 4, 2022.

The awards will be based on determination of the two (2) best research projects, focused in the areas of health and fitness and/or clinical exercise physiology. The research must be presented in one (1) poster presentation in PDF format and will be evaluated by a committee of four (4) ACSM Fellows who worked closely with Dr. Pollock during his career, including two (2) ACSM Past Presidents.

The International Student Award honors students from countries outside of the United States and helps fund travel expenses for those traveling to the ACSM Annual Meeting to present their scholarly work.

In 2022, the American College of Sports Medicine Foundation will be offering two (2) $500 travel awards through the Gail E. Butterfield Nutrition Travel Award Fund.  The purpose of the awards is to provide annual assistance to help fund travel expenses accrued by two (2) Ph.D. students (one from the U.S. and one international student) to present their scholarly work at ACSM’s 69^th Annual Meeting in San Diego, California May 31 – June 4, 2022.

The Howard G. "Skip" Knuttgen International Scholar Award allows professionals to gain technical expertise and/or scientific knowledge through an international exchange program. Award recipients from the United States and Canada are required to travel to an institution outside of the United States or Canada. Similarly, award recipients from countries other than Canada and the United States are required to travel to an institution within the United States or Canada.

This is the only award that does not require ACSM membership to apply.

To recognize innovative, high quality research in the field of sports nutrition being presented at ACSM’s 69^th Annual Meeting in San Diego, California May 31 - June 4, 2022. Recognized work will be high impact science and may include applied, mechanistic, protocol development or clinical research.  All work must have the potential for practical outcomes in the translation of sports nutrition science for sports health professionals and athletes.

The purpose of the award is to provide assistance to fund travel expenses accrued by (2) doctoral or post-doctoral fellows to present their scholarly work at ACSM’s 69^th Annual Meeting in San Diego, California from May 31 - June 4, 2022.  This award is enabled by generous donations from ACSM members and friends of Dr. Wilmore, and by a multi-year commitment by Human Kinetics.

The New Investigator Award is intended to recognize new investigators who, as a consequence of their educational background/training and quality of initial independent research productivity, have begun and are likely to continue to make a significant contribution to knowledge in basic or clinical exercise science or sports medicine.

The Visiting Scholar Award is given to investigators who need further experience as independent researchers. The purpose of the award is to provide financial support for an investigator to visit a clinic or laboratory of his/her choice to learn new and current techniques in exercise and sports medicine. Travel, financial support and laboratory supplies will be provided to the recipient for a period of up to six months..
